The earliest residents are thought to be Native Americans, who settled in the region circa 6000 BC. Thousands of years later, native tribes built a path that would soon be expanded and modernized – Peachtree Road, the city’s first and most famous roadway. With the coming of the railroad in 1837, Atlanta began to turn into a modern city, complete with a grocery store and post office. The town was soon home to a doctor, schools, a sawmill and a lumber yard – developments that paved the way for the city to become the thriving cosmopolitan center it is today.
